On 29 July 2017, Chad Anderson, Justin Fornal and Johnnie Mundell successfully swam around the 100-mile coastline of Islay for the first time. This adventure, dubbed The Great Islay Swim, lasted eight days.
To make things even harder, The Great Islay Swim chaps had a quarter cask in tow that they needed to fill with whisky from all the eight active whisky distilleries on Islay. On the first day, they started at Ardbeg and stopped at Lagavulin, then via Laphroaig (day 2), Bowmore (day 3), Bruichladdich (day 4), Kilchoman (day 5), Bunnahabhain (day 6) and Caol Ila (day 7) they returned to Ardbeg on day 8. The whiskies collected from the individual distilleries ranged from 10 to 23 years of age. Kilchoman contributed part of a 10-year-old bourbon barrel.
The resulting vatted malt was married for several months in that very same quarter cask before being bottled under the name “Explorer’s Cask” by the independent American bottler Single Cask Nation and sold from the beginning of 2018. All proceeds were donated to the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI).
