Two new Vatting Tanks installed

Kilchoman reported on its website today that 2014 has been a busy start to the year at the distillery with lots of new equipment being fitted.

After the new warehouse in Conisby was completed at the end of 2013 and all the casks were transferred there, the space freed up in Warehouse No. 1 was used to install two new vatting tanks. In future, they will be used to marry the casks for the larger editions, such as Machir Bay and 100% Islay, before bottling. Previously, the company had to rely on help from Bruichladdich, where the casks were emptied and married before being returned to Kilchoman’s bottling hall in large plastic containers.

Improvements have also been made to the malt transport system on the malt floor, which will make transporting the barley from the malt floor to the kiln quicker and easier. A conveyor in the middle of the floor now takes the barley straight up and into the Kiln. An improvement from previously using broom handles a variety of other things to poke barley down a shoot at the end of the malt floor.

Since Kilchoman completed a bottling room with a small bottling line at the beginning of June 2011, the bottling could be done at least in parts by machine and the times of bottling with the help of teapots were finally history. Now Kilchoman is taking the next step. A new corking machine and conveyors in the bottling hall will make the bottling team’s work much easier in the future – bruised hands from pushing in 1000’s of corks a day will be a thing of the past!

New equipment in the bottling hall

Kilchoman is looking forward to showing visitors these improvements when the visitor centre reopens on February the 6th.
