Floor Maltings and Kiln start up once again

Malcolm Rennie on the malting floor

Kilchoman Distillery was proud to announce today that they have finally been able to start malting the farm’s own barley again. The first batch from the 2007 harvest was soaked in the steeping tank this morning and will be spread out on the malting floor on Thursday. At the beginning of next week, the rebuilt kiln, now equipped with indirect oil fired drying system, will also go back into operation.

The Kiln was destroyed by fire in February 2006, which meant that the production of whisky from the farm’s own barley – the credo of a farm distillery – could never really begin. Kilchoman is therefore all the happier that this frustrating time until the Kiln is back in operation is now coming to an end.
