With the sister casks 556/2012 and 557/2012, two “unpeated” 100% Islay Oloroso Sherry Single Cask releases for the Mid Atlantic Region, the so-called Mid Atlantic States on the East Coast of the USA, were announced for the end of 2021: the cask 556/2012 mentioned here was bottled for Lee & Greg, a private whisky group, but some bottles were also sold in liquor stores in the Mid Atlantic Region. Announced for the end of 2021, the bottlings did not appear until the 2nd half of 2022.
The whisky was made from unpeated malt, but because the receivers were not emptied and the pipes not flushed between the distilling processes, the whisky still has a slight peat smoke note. For this reason, Kilchoman always puts the word “unpeated” in inverted commas for these bottlings; in the USA, earlier releases were called “sligthly peated”. In order to avoid further confusion, the term “unpeated” was not even used in this case – at least that is the official version, but perhaps it was simply forgotten. This led to the point that the responsible persons at the US importer ImpEx Beverages, who selected these casks on the basis of cask samples, were not even aware of this fact and only reacted very surprised when I pointed it out to them…
The distillation date 23.9.2012 given on the label is a typo, the correct date is 23.8.2012.
