The basis of the whiskies in the series of Small Batch Releases for Selected Markets launched in 2019, with which Kilchoman presents its experimental side, is always an already finished Machir Bay vatting or Machir Bay Collaborative Vatting , i.e. a whisky with 46% alcohol strength, which was previously matured for about five years predominantly in bourbon barrels and 5-15% in oloroso sherry casks. This vatting is then married with an additional special cask. With the usual small batch editions of about 1,260 bottles, this is literally exactly one cask in the vatting. For the double China Small Batch editions, 2 casks are required in each case.

For the China Small Batch No. 4, released in 2023, the additional casks are two STR casks (Shaved, Toasted & Re-charred ex-Red Wine casks). The shares are stated as 75% Bourbon, 5% (Oloroso) Sherry and 20% STR.
