Kilchoman Loch Gorm 2015 announced

Kilchoman announced yesterday the release of the 2015 edition of Loch Gorm. It will be available in the distillery shop from 23 March and shortly afterwards at retailers worldwide.

The annual release, named after a loch near the distillery, is known to be composed exclusively of oloroso sherry casks. This year’s already 3rd edition was composed of casks filled in 2009 and 2010. Thus, it is only slightly older than the previous year’s version, namely a little over 5 years. The difference to last year’s release, which was composed exclusively of five-year-old Oloroso Sherry Butts and was considered by some whisky fans as not sherry-toned enough, is the additional use of some Oloroso Sherry Hogsheads. According to Kilchoman founder Anthony Wills, these smaller casks give the Loch Gorm an increased sherry influence.

Anthony Wills writes: »As well as this year’s release being slightly older, we decided to increase the ratio of single malt matured in smaller sherry hogsheads versus that matured in larger sherry butts. This increases the influence from the sherry casks and gives the whisky a striking intensity and richness. That said, the whisky retains the balance and complexity Kilchoman releases are well-known for.«

As always with Kilchoman, the whisky is non chill-filtered and non coloured. The number of bottles is not stated, but according to Frans Muthert it should be 10,000 bottles.
