For the Kilchoman Tasting Tour in Germany in September 2010, an exclusive Kilchoman release – a nearly 4-year-old 1st Fill Oloroso Sherry Butt – was bottled. This was only the second Kilchoman single cask release for Germany.
The Oloroso Sherry Butt 332/2006 was a so-called “split cask”. I.e. only part of the contents was used for this bottling, the other part was bottled on the same day for the French whisky fair Whisky Live 2010 in Paris.
Especially in the early Kilchoman days, where the individual markets did not yet require such high bottle numbers, it was a common practice to split the contents of the large 500 litre sherry butts between two or three bottlings.
What is interesting is that both bottlings indicate different alcohol contents, 61% here and 61.9% for the Whisky Live Release. This is obviously a mistake.
In addition, the text on the back of the box, which was used for all of Kilchoman’s numerous 3-year-old single cask bourbon bottlings in 2010, has been changed to reflect the type of cask, i.e. instead of ‘aged for three years in a fresh bourbon barrel’ it now says ‘aged for three years in a fresh sherry butt’. The flavour description, printed also on the backlabel of the bottle, however, remained unchanged! A sherry butt that tastes like a bourbon barrel, hmm…
