It is Kilchoman’s stated policy not to sell whiskies to independent bottlers. Among the few exceptions to this principle, the 7 Bourbon Barrel bottlings of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) released between 2012 and 2015 form the largest group.

In order to avoid trademark problems, the extremely renowned Leith-based Society does not mention the names of the distilleries on its bottlings, but only a number consisting of the distillery code and the consecutive number of SMWS bottlings of the corresponding distillery. The members of the SMWS have a list with the distillery codes, Kilchoman has the number 129 here.

The SMWS is known for its very creative flavour descriptions, a handy summary of which gives each release a distinct name.

The sixth SMWS Kilchoman bottling mentioned here was released in 2015. As with all seven SMWS releases, it is a bottling of a 1st fill ex-bourbon barrel – with an age of 6 years the oldest Kilchoman cask bottled by the SMWS.
