Loch Gorm 2023 Edition released

The Kilchoman distillery today announced the release of this year’s Loch Gorm. Named after the famous loch near the distillery, the bottling is matured exclusively in sherry casks and is traditionally the first limited Kilchoman release of the year.

For the 2023 edition, Kilchoman founder Anthony Wills and production manager Robin Bignal selected a total of 22 casks, 8 distilled in 2013, 6 distilled in 2014, and 8 distilled in 2015. As always with Kilchoman, the 500 litre sherry butts come from the José y Miguel Martín Bodega and were filled with spirit that has a phenol content of 50 ppm. The vatting of these 22 casks, diluted down to 46%, resulted in a yield of 18,000 bottles.

As is well known, the annual Loch Gorm editions differ somewhat from year to year in the composition of the casks used. With two exceptions in the early days of the series, when hogsheads were also used, they are always Oloroso Sherry Butts, but of different ages and with different numbers of first fill and refill casks. According to Anthony Wills and Robin Bignal, the aim of the cask composition was to create a whisky with a recognisable Kilchoman character despite the strong sherry tones.

“Rather than dominating, Loch Gorm’s oloroso maturation works in harmony with the natural character of Kilchoman. The 2023 release has a fantastic spectrum of flavour, from rich spices and macerated peaches to fresh citrus, ginger, orange zest and waves of salty peat smoke.” Anthony Wills, Kilchoman Founder.
