On 3 October 2014, Kilchoman released its first limited release at cask strength with the “Original Cask Strength Release”.

35 ex-bourbon barrels from 2009 were selected for the bottling, with a total yield of 9,200 bottles. The whisky was not coloured or chill-filtered and was bottled at natural cask strength, presenting it in its purest form with an unparalleled intensity of flavour and texture.

Anthony Wills, Managing Director of Kilchoman, said: “It has always been my intention to release a cask strength expression once we had the stock available.  This is the way single malt should be drunk.  It allows everyone to experience Kilchoman with all the characteristics captured in the glass.”

This bottling was the start of a very short-lived series, which was only continued two years later in autumn 2016 with the Original Cask Strength – Quarter Cask Release. However, Anthony Wills did not give up his preference for unadulterated whisky bottled at cask strength. Special bottlings of Machir Bay at cask strength enjoyed great popularity among Kilchoman fans in the coming years and finally, at the beginning of 2024, the cask stocks allowed the launch of a Batch Strength Release as Kilchoman’s third general release.
